The lights of my office cast a dusty glow over the tower of hard drives sitting on the edge of my desk. Thirty years of a commercial photography career are trapped inside those enclosures. Not just work, but also thousands of raw, unfiltered personal images as well. The ones shot at 6 AM when the light hit a part of the wall just right, the ones that had nothing to do with commercial jobs.
We all do it. We let our truest creative expressions sit hidden, waiting for a magical day when we feel ready. But hoarding your work won’t cure your creative burnout. Art needs to be tangible to create a real human connection.
I want to challenge you to confront that creative fear, stop hiding, and start moving your stories into the physical world where they belong. For decades, I told myself that my personal work wasn't ready for the world or that I would get around to it someday. I was hiding behind the lens of professionalism, using client work as a shield to protect myself from the vulnerability of showing who I really am as an artist.
This way of thinking is a classic creative trap. We store our souls in closets, on hard drives, or let images sit idle on our camera rolls, waiting for some magical day when we feel ready to share them. But art isn't meant to be hoarded. It's meant to be a bridge.
This year, I've been wrestling with this exact form of creative fear, and I made two distinct videos to show you how I am finally breaking through my own walls. I want to inspire you to see how you can do the same right now.
We need to talk about the grit it takes to move past perfectionism. Whether your work is trapped on an old drive, forgotten in hundreds of snapshots on your phone, or buried somewhere in your home or studio. I believe you are sitting on a legacy. It's time to stop waiting for the perfect time and start honoring the stories only you can tell.
How I Turned iPhone Photos Into A Book
We often view our smartphones as tools for distraction rather than instruments of deep visual storytelling. But carrying an iPhone everywhere completely reignited my creative fire. I realized that the images I almost didn't take, the unplanned, unfiltered, ordinary moments, held the most profound human connection. In this video, I walk you through how I took thousands of those forgotten mobile snapshots and curated them into a deeply meaningful, physically printed book using Blurb.com.
You don't need a heavy gear bag or a studio crew to build a legacy. From sorting through your messy camera roll to simple editing tips, I'll show you why making something physical out of your digital chaos matters more than ever.
Stop Hiding Your Work: Lessons From 30 Years Behind the Lens
For decades, I convinced myself that my personal photography didn’t count unless it fit into a neat, commercial box. In this episode, I pull back the curtain on creative fear and share the exact pivot that forced me to stop hiding. I’ll show you how to pause and look for a feeling rather than just a frame before you press the shutter, and how you can discover unique shots in places where everyone else is taking the same picture. It isn’t about having the most expensive camera body or a high-end lighting setup, it’s about training your eyes to see what others walk right past.
If you’ve ever doubted your own voice or felt like your personal projects aren’t ready for the light of day, let this be the push you need to let go of the highlight-reel culture and own your truth.
